PREPARING FOR THE WORD

Call to Worship (From Psalm 124)                                      Curtis Winston

Leader:    Had it not been for the Lord who was on our side….

People:   They would have swallowed us alive.

Leader:    The raging waters would have swept over our souls.

People:   Our help is in the name of the Lord.

All:   Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth.

        Let us worship God.

*Hymn of Praise   Jesus Loves Me!                                      Hymnal, pg. 304

*Call to Confession     (Silent Confession)

*Prayer of Confession (unison)

Lord God, Your will for our lives is sometimes hard to understand, but even when

we do know what You want us to do, Your will is often harder yet for us to obey.

We know what Your expectations of us are – yet we presume upon Your mercy

     by simplifying Your commandments.

We lessen any demand upon ourselves by lowering the standard of good news

     You would have us maintain.

Forgive our hardness of heart; forgive our tendency to live by our own easy rules.

Strengthen our resolve to lives as a faithful people, a giving and serving people,

     a people of integrity.

May our lives be what YOU intend.

We pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

*Assurance of Pardon

Leader:    Hear the good news:   God’s compassion never ends.

People:   Believe the good news:  God’s love and mercy never fail.

All:   Trust the good news:   In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

         Thanks be to God.

*Choral Response          Gloria Patri                                  Hymnal, pg. 579

“Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning,                            is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen, Amen.”

HEARING THE WORD

Reception of New Members

Prayer of Illumination (unison)

Mighty God, when we see the innocent suffer or watch hardship fall indiscriminately,

     we look for explanations.

We want answers to explain the harsh and arbitrary ways of the world.

Help us in our questioning to maintain our faith in you.

When events around us shake and disturb us, let our confidence in You

     remain unshakable.

Let us know beyond every fear and every doubt, beyond every unanswered question,

Your goodness and strength remain our source of hope.

We pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

RESPONDING TO THE WORD

The Offering

Offertory   First Light

*Doxology                                                                                    Hymnal, pg. 592

“Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here

below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy

 Ghost.  Amen.”

*Prayer of Dedication (unison)

Christ, You opened your arms to love and serve everyone in your midst.

You gave to those whom society said weren’t worthy.

And you gave your all – not begrudgingly, but joyfully.

Teach us to give as you did!  Amen.

*Affirmation of Faith (unison)                                           Written by Jose Luis Casal

I believe in Almighty God, who guided his people in exile and in exodus,

the God of Joseph in Egypt and of Daniel in Babylon, the God of foreigners

     and immigrants.

I believe in Jesus Christ, a displaced Galilean, who was born away from his

people and his home, who had to flee the county with his parents when his

     life was in danger.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the eternal immigrant from God’s kingdom among us,

who speaks all languages, lives in all countries, and unites all races.

I believe that the church is the secure home for all foreigners and believers who

constitute it, speak the same language, and have the same purpose.

I believe in the eternal life beyond this world, where no one will be an immigrant

but all will be citizens of God’s kingdom that has no end.  Amen.

Joys and Concerns

Prayers of the Pastor and the People

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our

debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.  Amen.

*Hymn of Praise   God of Grace and God of Glory              Hymnal, pg. 420
