PREPARING FOR THE WORD

Call to Worship (From Psalm 1)                                          John Mansure

Leader:    How blessed is the one who does not walk in the council of the wicked!

People:   Nor stand in the path of sinners.

Leader:    Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!

People:   Their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on that law they meditate

                day and night.

Leader:    They shall be like a tree planted by the streams of water.

People:   Which yields its fruit in the season.

All:   The Lord knows the way of the righteous.

         Let us worship God.

*Hymn of Praise   Praise the Source of Faith and Learning

*Call to Confession

     (Silent Confession)

*Prayer of Confession (unison)

Great judge and redeemer, we hear the outcry of the powerless who are

     defrauded by the rich.

You know without our telling You that we have frequently envied the wealthy.

Forgive us is we have conspired with any to deny the rights of the poor,

or withheld from anyone the help we were asked to give.

Teach us to love and serve all your children.

We pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

*Assurance of Pardon

Leader:    Hear the good news:   The Lord givers justice and compassion.

People:   Believe the good news:  Our sins are forgiven.

All:   Trust the good news:   We are made whole and restored to life.

         Thanks be to God.

*Choral Response          Gloria Patri                                  Hymnal, pg. 579

“Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen, Amen.”

HEARING THE WORD

Prayer of Illumination (unison)

Remind us, O powerful and potent God, that Jesus had it right –

that those who would follow him must deny themselves and take up

     their own cross.

We’re not sure what that means, Dear God.

Challenge our thought, our deeds, our aspirations as we struggle to

understand what it means to truly follow you.  Amen.

Epistle:   James 3:13-4:8a                                                     Pew Bible, NT, pgs. 230-231

*Prayer of Dedication (unison)

Teach us O Lord, the very real joy of giving.

Teach us to give our time, our talents, and our money to our sisters
